Your IP address is the address assigned to you by your Internet Service Provider. This is how all other computers outside your local network see you.

Think of it as the digital world’s equivalent to a street address. This happens automatically and is not something you need to specifically ask for or order. An IP address may be “static” and never change, or it may be “dynamic” and change from time to time.

All of your computers / devices on your local network (ie. the same internet connection) will have the same IP (external) address to the outside world.

There may be times when you are asked for your IP address, such as when you are being blocked by a firewall and you need to provide your IP address so that you can be granted access to a server.
